Gawker has unearthed a rather odd bug in the Google Translate software: its English-to-Spanish translator converts the name of the actor Heath Ledger, who died tragically on Tuesday, to the name of another actor--Tom Cruise. So if you enter in "I will miss Heath Ledger," Google Translate will come back with "Voy a perder Tom Cruise."

Ein neuartiges GPS-Halsband soll nun dafür sorgen, dass Herrchen den haarigen Kumpel schnell wieder auftreiben kann.

If and when it pans out, MADCAT is expected to provide "relevant, distilled, actionable information" to commanders and troops on the ground by translating foreign language text images accurately and automatically without bothering with linguists and analysts, according to the contract specifications. During the MADCAT proposal process DARPA demanded bidders demonstrate a "revolutionary approach," one that will produce a new benchmark in language translation. Specifically excluded were "minor evolutionary" improvements or "narrow applications" to current technology.
BBN says it plans to pull it off by integrating "optical character recognition with state-of-the-art translation and distillation techniques," while developing "novel methods for processing handwritten text," according to its press release.

PCLOS-Trans is a live DVD, Linguas OS a live CD. Both can be run without
installation, i.e. without making any changes to the user's hard drive,
but can also be installed on the hard drive if desired. PCLOS-Trans is
more comprehensive and user-friendly, Linguas OS less so but probably
faster.

On the basis of the linux distribution PCLinuxOS we have created a desktop linux system for translators.
PCLOS-Trans is full fledged desktop system meant as a replacement for the widely known OS. But it is not just an operating system, it is also a collection of software applications which allows a translator to do his/her job most efficiently and in line with the latest standards.

Auf der Basis der Linux-Distribution PCLinuxOS haben wir einen Desktop-Pc zusammengestellt, der neben dem Betriebssystem eine Reihe von spezifischen Anwendungen enthält. Diese Anwendungen wurden ausgewählt, um ein möglichst effizientes Übersetzen am PC zu ermöglichen.
